What we like:

  • South Carolina has legally defined the notion of a gift card
  • If less than one year, expiration and fee must be displayed on the front of the gift card in 10 point font, capitalized letters

What could be better:

  • No limits on expiration dates
  • No maximum post-sale fee or minimum time frame before charging monthly fees
  • Merchants are not required to give cash back
  • Gift card escheatment details are not specified
  • South Carolina does not maintain a consumer-centric web page dedicated to gift card laws
